For some, staying in Disney villas is the ultimate dream come true.
Disney World has always been at the top of many children’s wish list, and staying in one of the Disney villas close to the theme park is a dream come true. But one forty-something showed she had never really grown up when she ended up in prison as a result of her fixation with all things Disney.
Disney World – Not Just for Kids!
It’s true that for many adults, Disney World still has the magic. And sure, there’s a little boy or girl underneath the grown up façade in all of us. But for Leslie Moyies from Essex staying in Disney villas and visiting the famed theme park was an obsession - an obsession that led to her being jailed in 2000. The bank manager stole £150,000 to fund her Disney fixation.
Dreaming away reality
Flying to America and booking Disney villas near to the theme parks was a way for her to escape a stressful job and unhappy marriage, the Crown Court heard. As well as booking Disney villas in Florida, she also regularly went to the Disney theme park in France. The cost of the flights, renting out Disney villas, hotel accommodation, the theme park entrance and souvenirs were all met by stealing the cash from the bank she worked at. She took the cash by siphoning it from accounts she had access to.

The Disney fixation lasted four and a half years and psychologists said Disney made her happy – flying out to stay in Disney villas was a way for her to escape her unhappy realities. Disney became a ‘distraction technique’ and staying in Disney villas in Florida was a way of burying herself in a fantasy world. But the Disney daydream soon became a nightmare when she was caught out for her crimes and was arrested.
Lotto winner chooses Disney
Although the case shows the extreme lengths people will go to, most visitors to Florida keep their feet on the ground, even if their head is in the clouds. Many adults are still fixated with Disney, and for Joanne Gilbert, a lottery winner and grandmother from south Wales, staying in Disney villas and visiting the world’s most famous theme park could now be a reality thanks to her lotto win. She said the trip would be a realisation of her ‘childhood dream’. Ms Gilbert won £1.1 million using six numbers based on family birthdays that she’d been using since the lottery started.
She told the press: “The win still hasn't sunk in, and I'll need to think very carefully about what I want to do with the money, but one thing that has always been at the top of my list is a trip to Disneyland in America - I'm a big kid really.”
