When you’ve booked two weeks in one of the Disney villas in Florida, you can be forgiven for thinking you’re guaranteed 14 days of unrelenting happiness, sunshine and fun. Let’s face it, Disneyworld is on the top of the list of just about every child in the world, and it’s the number one destination for all those children trapped in the bodies of grown-ups.

But research shows that when we go on holiday, even when we’re staying in stress free luxury Disney villas, we pile on the expectation. We expect endless sun, endless fun and no difficulties whatsoever. But even the most ideal Disney villa holiday will encounter problems – parking problems, traffic jams, long queues to get on the theme park rides, a spilt drink – nothing runs smoothly, and if it did, life would be quite dull. But when you have booked two precious weeks leave and rented out one of the Disney villas, spending maybe thousands of pounds on travel, accommodation and general holiday money, there’s bound to be some stress flying around.

So what can you do to minimise the stress?

• Plan ahead and organise.

No matter how fantastic your luxury Disney villas are, you don’t want to spend two weeks lounging around your private pool. Similarly, you don’t want to spend every minute manically trying to squeeze every Disney ride in either. Before you go, find out what everyone in the family wants to do and try and come up with an itinerary so everyone is happy.

• Split up

Being in each other’s hair all day, 24-7 will lead to arguments. If you’re based in one of the Disney villas you’re perfectly located to go and explore. If mum and daughter want to shop but father and son want to visit a museum, split up – you’ll have stories to share when you meet back at your Disney villa later in the evening.

• Bargain

If junior wants to go on the scariest rollercoaster in town, but you want some quiet time around a nature reserve, get haggling. If you can do this today, Junior can do that tomorrow – that way you can enjoy staying in Disney villas without too much sulking.

• Routine

Children thrive off routine, and if you’re staying in one of the Disney villas, you have the benefit of having a home from home. Take along a favourite teddy or blanket for very small children, and explain why the food is different to the normal mealtimes at home.
