Florida Villas – Stormy Weather

Hurricanes are a fact of Florida life, and although they can affect some holidays, most of those renting Florida villas can enjoy their holiday without ever coming near one of these storms.

Enjoy the sun

Hurricanes in Florida get a lot of publicity - if you are renting out one of the luxury Florida villas for your holidays, you might have some concerns. But the majority of people enjoy their holiday without coming near to extreme weather. If you are concerned, there are sensible precautions you can take.

The Hurricane Season

If you are concerned about the Hurricane Season when you’re booking into one of the Florida villas available for rent, the Florida Hurricane Season officially starts on June 1st and ends on November 30.  The more active months are August through to October.  Historically, September is the most active month of the Florida hurricane season.

What exactly are hurricanes?

If you are staying in one of Florida’s villas and don’t know what to expect from a hurricane, don’t worry, if there are hurricanes coming you will get plenty of warning.
Hurricanes are violent tropical storms with sustained winds of at least 74 mph. They form over warm ocean waters and as they drift westward, they are fuelled by the warm waters of the tropics. Warm, moist air moves toward the centre of the storm and spirals upward, which releases torrential rain. This triggers a cycle that can only be stopped when contact is made with land or cooler water.

What to do

If you are staying in one of Florida’s villas and the area is going to be hit by a serious hurricane, don’t worry, you will be evacuated by officials. If you are outside the eye of the storm but are likely to experience torrential weather, you should:

  • Stay Indoors – if you are in a sound structure like a Florida villa, stay indoors.
  • Protect your windows and stay away from the windows during the storm.
  • Check you have water, non-perishable food and any medication you need.
  • Gather candles and entertainment that doesn’t rely on electricity in case electricity goes down.
  • Don’t use any electrical appliances or the phone during the storm – beware of lightning. Only use the phone for emergencies.
  • Don’t go outside – it isn’t worth risk being hit by debris. Wait for the official ‘all clear’.

If you do suffer a power cut in your Florida villa during a hurricane, remember that you should throw away any spoiled food from the fridge – you don’t want to end up with food poisoning.

Be assured that the majority of tourists visit Florida year after year and the only weather they encounter is glorious sunshine.
