If however you want to do Disney and avoid the crowds, it’s probably a good idea to avoid school holidays and the peak summer period. Late January is a good time to go.

Of course American English is spoken but Spanish has effective dual-language status in parts of Miami. Some other useful facts if you’re renting out one of Florida’s villas include:

  • Population of Orlando: 176,500
  • Area: 243 sq km, 94 sq miles
  • Currency: US Dollar
  • Electricity: 110V 60Hz, American-style plug with two flat blades above a circular grounding pin or Japanese-style plugs with two parallel flat blades.

History of Orlando

If you’re staying in Florida villas in Orlando learning about the culture and history of the area is a great way to enhance your experience.

The Beginning

Orlando began life as nothing more than a rudimentary settlement tacked onto a military base during the Seminole Indian wars. At the end of the war, settlers moved in and renamed the land, originally known as Jernigan to Orlando after Orlando Reeves, a soldier killed by Indians. When you are staying in one of the luxury Florida villas in Orlando and visiting its many theme parks, it is strange to think of this violent and brutal beginning to the area that is now synonymous with family fun.

City built on orange peel

The citrus boom led to the phrase ‘the city built on the peel of an orange’ as Orlando thrived at the turn of the century. Railroad and real estate booms came later, but the cash influx that really established Orlando came in the 1950s as Man began to explore Space. The Space Age resulted in the Cape Kennedy Space Centres on the east coast.
The mighty mouse

In 1971, Walt Disney made the area into a theme park heaven – as a result apartments, luxury Florida villas, resorts, hotels and restaurants all boomed as the tourists poured in.
Orlando also famously became known as the Silican Valley of Florida with the high tech boom. It’s a long way from the rudimentary backwater and is now the fourth most popular place for overseas visitors coming to America – with thousands renting out luxury Florida villas in the area for their summer holidays.
